Landscape management activities applied to a pilot garden.

Rewilded urban green spaces could become a new landscape typology, defined by both form and the specific management processes that shape it.

Intended wildness provides a middle ground between low-diversity lawns and mature tropical rainforests.

The desired design outcome should work for both nature and humans. A rewilded landscape increases urban biodiversity with flora that mimics lost habitat of increasing homeless fauna; while simultaneously strengthens public preference for less manicured landscapes.

The challenge for landscape designers is to balance the two goals.

Yun Hye Hwang, landscape architect and rewilding advocate, found that designing indicators to show that vegetation is intentionally wild can address anthropocentric concerns.

People generally respond well when they can be amidst nature “but from a distance”.
